Media Update - Reputations Online 11 December 2008

India’s top law minister announced a massive overhaul of the country’s security and intelligence agencies in the wake of the Mumbai attacks. British companies with outsourced operations in the country as well as call centres have welcomed the news as many were reconsidering their Business Continuity Plans for the region.
Home minister Palaniappan Chidambaram made the announcement in a speech to India’s parliament. He said the government would beef up coastal security forces, create a national investigative agency, better train local police and strengthen anti-terror laws.
The measures are the government’s first detailed response to the public outcry over security and intelligence failures in the attacks, which left 171 dead in India’s financial capital. Mr Chidambaram has previously admitted to government “lapses” over the attacks. Since July 2006 there have been terrorist attacks in major cities including Mumbai, New Delhi, Jaipur, Faizabad, Varanasi, Lucknow and Hyderabad.
